Towards  A Brighter Tomorrow

A career guidance program was held at St. Thomas’ Girl’s School, Kidderpore on 15th July 2022 for the students of class XII to map out the future for young minds as they are on the threshold of the most important decision of their lives. They are about to step out of the school boundaries and have to choose their stream of higher education with a focus on career choices they plan to make. They need to identify their strengths and interests and also check the prospects of the career they plan to choose. They need to understand the options available to them vis-à-vis the path they choose to follow. Thus this session was them in enabling them with the ability to make the right choices in education to pursue with a focus on career and the skills and knowledge they need to aquire.
Career Guidance Program – An Interactive Workshop
Session 1 – Career Guidance and the means to achieve career goals
Sandip Banerjee, our guest speaker who is an educator, an active Rotarian and an avid writer conducted the first session. It was on education and career guidance which highlighted the ways in which these young students can achieve their career goals. He also gave them valuable information on the aid and assistance they can get from Government of West Bengal through the various schemes that have been introduced to help students. Mr Sandip Banerjee guided the students on how to choose a career in keeping with their passions and ambitions. He spoke about the need to identify what we are good at. He also gave the students an insight into the change in the work culture and work environment in the post Covid world.

Session 2 – .Career exploration and discovery – A career guidance seminar
Jason Pote, one of our founder members walked them through a matrix on how to choose a career they would love. He also guided them on the how to hone the aptitude and skills sets they would need to succeed. He used the Ikigai method and guided them on how to identify their passions, their interests and strengths and choose a career path in accordance. He guided them on how to hone their skills and how skills are closely tied to interests.

This was an intense 2 hour session followed by question answer sessions. The participants were enthusiastic and eager to get the guidance to formulate their road map ahead. Students were eager to ask questions at the end of each session. One interesting question that arose was how to convince parents about a career choice they make. The answer that emerged was that they need to believe in their dreams themselves and identify the choice based on introspection, research and identifying their own strengths and skills. If so it is easy to convince parents about their dreams. Also parents need to be encouraged to talk to concerned domain experts to clarify their doubts. Wrong choices can dismantle careers.
The students were left with one important thought at the end of the session : “If you fail to plan , you plan to fail “ Thus they need to focus on their plans for their future with the right incisive investigation of their interests and strengths and also explore the prospects of the path they plan to choose and the efforts that will be required to succeed. For this proper education and career guidance is essential and that will help in seamless planning for the future career path.
The response from the students was over whelming. They were eager to have more such sessions in future.
