Career Guidance for Students – St Augustine’s School , Shyamnagar
Marching into tomorrow
After much back and forth, we finally made the long car drive to St Augustines Shyamnagar to conduct a Seminar for Career guidance for students of high school students who are at the brink of their school life. The hospitality and warmth overshadowed the 2 hour journey, and the exuberance and excitement of the students was the cherry on the cake. We conducted a critical session on choosing and making the correct career choices, followed by a short, but informative session on the art of communicating.
The students were keen to learn and had many queries. They were energetic and responsive. Career guidance for students was essential for them to plan their future trajectories
Career Guidance Seminar – we conducted two interactive sessions to provide career guidance for students
Session 1 – Career Exploration and Discovery – This session by Jason Pote, our founder member. He addressed the need for career guidance for students and how to make the right career choices. It was meant to help the students to identify their strength areas, interests and passions along with exploring the possibilities in exploring their interests.
The session was based on the Ikigai method. It began with the need to identify skills and passions and then went on to how one can hone their skills and talents and finally how to channelize their skills to find a successful and fulfilling career path in sync with their interests. The students did some interesting exercises and those helped them to find their answers. It was a long interactive session followed by questions and answers.
What emerged as the key take away from this session was the need to introspect and identify one’s own interests and skills and also the need to do the requisite research to find out what career options are available to match these interests and skills. They realized the need to reach out and do it themselves while seeking the required guidance. There are innumerable opportunities waiting to be explored and all the jobs are not even listed. There are options which are sometimes well beyond the traditional career paths that could constrict them and their talent. They need to identify their strengths and interests and find out how to explore career paths in keeping with their interests.
Session 2 – Communication essentials – This session was conducted by Rajrupa Chakravarty, our founder member who elucidated the need for effective communication and essential features of effective communication as an important additive to career guidance for students. She also explored the typical barriers to effective communication that needs to be tackled. She stressed on the need to identify the W’s and work on the Cs of communication and to keep it short and simple always.
The event was well appreciated by the Principal, Rev. Rodney Borneo, and the students. We left with a promise to return to St Augustines in the near future.
We sought feedback from the students and their response and enthusiasm was truly encouraging. Their responses have been featured in the video embedded on this page. Their answers to the feedback queries haven been appended below as well.
This event was featured in TTIS in a detailed report by their school captain Mauro Cannanzi who has covered the entire session minutely.
We look forward to more such session with such bright young minds.
